- Abstract
- This essay summarizes the process and creation of the role of Elmire in CU Boulder’s production of Moliere’s Tartuffe. It discusses the roles of women in seventeenth century France and how these roles affect an actor’s interpretation of Elmire. I argue that Elmire is an example of early feminism in theatre and that her character was purposefully placed in this play to demonstrate the importance and intelligence of women. The paper chronicles the process for an actor from beginning to end of a production, including aspects of character work, research, and execution that create the final product.
