Taking Up Space--Extensions of My Body Público Deposited
- Alternative Title
- Abstract
A personal exploration of the notion of “coming of age” and the experiences that have shaped my being, which I refer to as lived experience. I have been examining this idea within the context of patriarchal perceptions and biases of the female gender. Still today, violence against women and the LGBTQ+ community disproportionally affects the psychological and physical well-being of both groups. This is exacerbated by stigmas surrounding mental health, mental health care, and access to it. These problematic perceptions have in turn affected my ideas about gender in both conscious and unconscious ways. I discovered these negative values have manifested in myself as feelings of disorientation and shame which through studies generalizes queer experiences within our heteronormative society.
I developed an interest in creating pieces that act against conformity to dismantle my feelings of disorientation and shame.
