Abstract
  • Predictors of body image dissatisfaction in postpartum women have been previously understudied. This study examines the relationship between body image dissatisfaction and postpartum depression, negative self-referential emotions, self-compassion, relationship satisfaction, and life satisfaction in 49 postpartum primiparous mothers. Depressive symptoms, shame and guilt, self-compassion, and relationship satisfaction were significantly correlated to body image dissatisfaction, and relationship satisfaction significantly predicted body image dissatisfaction when controlling for the other psychological predictor variables. Further longitudinal research with multiple comparison groups is needed to determine direction of causation.
