Being With Blanche: A Poetic, Personal Documentary Public Pending review Público Deposited
- Abstract
This thesis explores the intersection of memory, caregiving, and resilience through a
documentary film about my 86-year-old grandmother, who lives with Alzheimer's. The film
documents her daily life and the caregiving role of my mother, highlighting themes of role
reversal, familial bonds, and perseverance. Drawing on film theory from André Bazin, Andrei
Tarkovsky, and Michael Renov, the paper examines how intimate visual storytelling captures the
beauty of mundane routines and transforms them into universal symbols of strength and faith.
Influenced by Marianne Hirsch’s concept of postmemory, the project preserves a legacy for
future generations, emphasizing the role of film as an archive of personal and familial history.
By blending personal narrative with theoretical analysis, this thesis reflects on the emotional
complexities of aging and caregiving while advocating for the therapeutic and cultural
significance of documentary filmmaking.
