- Abstract
- Throughout the twentieth century Western composers sought musical inspiration from non-Western cultures. The result was a potpourri of musical traditions. Now musicologists apply their analytical tools to the music of other cultures to better understand it in their own terms. Ethnomusicologists, for instance, record and notate music that for centuries was an aural tradition, and Schenkerian analysis is applied to an enormous range of music beyond the nineteenth-century forms for which it was first created.
