Abstract

This thesis will identify the pedagogical benefits of the Music Minus One genre and propose a practical solution to improving collaborative musical experiences among tuba players, with special attention paid during the repertoire selection to target beginning F tuba players. The research utilized in this thesis includes input from 13 college tuba and euphonium professors from across the United States and abroad. The results, implications, and some personal discoveries will be discussed, and there will be an additional performance and discussion video from Evan Allenson, a current sophomore tuba performance major at the University of Colorado Boulder. The title of the accompanying CD is Sorting Shapes: The F Tuba Helper. It addresses the many struggles or “shapes” that a student or professional must correct in their practice through trial and error. The CD features accompaniment tracks that can be used for individual preparation and score study prior to meeting with a collaborative pianist, and each piece of music on the CD was hand selected and questioned vigorously about its intention to a student’s development. The repertoire was approved and decided upon by speaking with some of the best tuba pedagogues in the world.
