Kumeyaay Comics: Beyond Gaming/Our Past Present and Future
Public Deposited- Abstract
This is a 44 page comic about the history of what we now call California from the perspective of members of the Kumeyaay Nation located in and around San Diego. This collaboration is between Kumeyaay tribal historians Ethan Banegas, Michael Connolly Miskwish, Lorraine Orosco, and Stanley Rodriguez; NAGPRA Comics producers Jen Shannon and John Swogger; and, Jewyl Alderson from the San Diego County Office of Education. Tribal historian Ethan Banegas (Luiseno-Kumeyaay) is the project director. This project was initiated when we presented together with tribal historians Mike Connolly Miskwish (Campo Kumeyaay Nation) and Stan Rodriguez (Kumeyaay-Iipay, Santa Ysabel) at San Diego Comic Con. The project was funded through a California Humanities for All Grant grant submitted by the Campo Kumeyaay Nation and Jen Shannon's Whiting Public Engagement Fellowship. The project included research, comics, community workshops, lesson plans, a traveling banner exhibit, and more. See https://kumeyaayvsp.weebly.com/.
