- Abstract
- In this dissertation I consider the modern elements of a series of specific texts that exemplify the new cultural sensibility consolidated in the modern age. At the same time, I analyze a series of characteristics of modernity that help to establish links among Miguel de Unamuno’s travel writings. In the first chapter of my dissertation I look at certain essential elements within two theoretical paradigms that meet in Unamuno’s travel books: modernity and travel literature. In addition to mentioning the most relevant critical bibliography about these matters, I identify a series of common features in Unamuno’s travel works. Finally, I include a brief review of these writings before analyzing the presence of modernist traits and tendencies in a group of specific texts in the following chapters. “La aparición de la figura del artista / intelectual en el fin de siglo: Paisajes y De mi país” is the title of the second chapter of my dissertation where I analyze how Unamuno’s criticism of bourgeois society is related to the figure of the intellectual that appears at the end of the nineteenth century. In the third chapter, “La ‘saudade’ portuguesa: ecos del Simbolismo y el Impresionismo en Por tierras de Portugal y España,” I study poetic elements from Symbolism that are present in these travel texts as well as Unamuno’s adaptation of Impressionist pictorial techniques in his travel writings.
