This study will analyze how policy surrounding tourism is affecting a local population in Maranhão, Brazil in both positive and negative ways. Although policy tends to be more impactful towards the economy, the research presented will focus more on the societal impacts, especially surrounding culture. Using collected interviews, analysis of prior research, and policy suggestions, this research will analyze the extent to which policy is presented in the region and how it is affecting the society. The economy was heavily focused on in this research during the interviews, but the research presents a preliminary, long-term study on how tourism is impacting this vulnerable culture in more ways than monetary. It is concluded here that the lack of knowledge surrounding policy on top of the changes occurring in the physical society and town present damages that may be occurring due to tourism. Finally, some policy suggestions are made to help better the integration of federal environmental and tourist policies in this culture to help protect the environment and the culture in this city.
