Abstract

In this master thesis we will present a new type of 2x2 3dB coupler that we called frustrated coupling based adiabatic coupler. In our knowledge this coupler has the best performance among all the 2x2 3dB 220nm thick silicon couplers. It has a splitting ratio of at least 51/49 over 200nm bandwidth. Also 0.11dB splitting ratio over 40nm bandwidth. Low loss under 2.5% over the 200nm and under 1% on the 40 bandwidth. Finally its footprint is 3.6m x 28m. It is 5 times smaller than the best MMI.
