Environmental Education on Misali Island: The Most Effective Environmental Education Teaching Methods and the Use Natural Resources to Educate Secondary Students on Pemba Island, Tanzania Public Deposited
- Abstract
This study aimed to increase the environmental education resources about Misali Island, an extremely biodiverse, remote area off the coast of Pemba Island (Zanzibar, Tanzania), for secondary students living on Pemba Island as there are currently no environmental education programs in place regarding Misali Island. In order to effectively increase and create environmental education resources about Misali Island, I researched the types of learning these students would respond to best and then how to implement this with hands-on techniques. Interviews with teachers were collected from three schools, namely Pondeiani Primary and Secondary School, and Wesha Secondary School. The bulk of the research was then conducted on Misali Island, collecting information, artifacts, and photographs to put together an environmental education resource specific to Misali Island. The result was originally five short “Niche Activity Books”, which are digital and hard-copy, laminated books containing a plethora of information, photographs, and activities for students’ educational benefit. These five books have now been combined into one hard-cover version, titled, The Niches of Misali Island. These books individually encapsulate the five main niches on Misali Island, including terrestrial forests, the beachfront, mangrove forests, the intertidal zone, and coral reefs. The goal for these activity books is to educate students about Misali with specific and general information about the environment in a fun and engaging manner, as well as create a foundational environmental education resource for students about Misali Island. A final hope is that the work put forth with the communities on Pemba and Misali Island to create these books will encourage more environmental education resources and programs throughout the Zanzibar archipelago.
