Abstract
  • We derive the concept of a system from fundamental features of both the mind and the world. In particular, we derive the concept of structure along Kantian lines from a priori features of the mind's understanding, and then we combine this concept with the concepts of change and continuity---which we hold, as with Heraclitus, to be fundamental features of nature---to arrive at a definition of a system. Then we review the role of structures and systems within mathematics and science. And finally we establish that the character of a system is an intermediate between the characters of the mind and the world and that the structure of a system is necessarily a root metaphor for all of our knowledge about the natural world.
