- Abstract
After an early 2000s period of democratic stability in the European Union, Hungary and Poland began to democratically backslide in the 2010s. This thesis seeks to understand the effects that economic and identity determinants of European integration have upon democratic backsliding in Eastern Europe. Examined are statistics regarding international trade, inward foreign direct investments, and standardized EuroBarometer questions regarding nationality and European sentiment. The findings indicate a more complex relationship between European integration and democratic backsliding, with the idea that greater integration yielding less backsliding ultimately rejected.
