- Abstract
- Dolley Madison was a well-known public figure who became the subject of gendered slander in the early 18th century. The question is why Dolley Madison was subject to unfounded rumors and accusations in this moment in time when she was fairly well-beloved. A combination of her self-presentation, gender norms, and print culture lead to baseless gendered allegations against her.
