Abstract
  • Combining two passions for dance and ethnic studies, I present a two-part thesis project that includes a dance film, “Tomando Café,” and a paper detailing the development of the work as it relates to my multi-faceted research. This process included interpersonal research acquired from forty-three random interviews with strangers in coffee shops, historical research on the Dirty War in Argentina and traditional Colombian and Argentinean dance forms, personal research quantifying my experience with dichotomy, academic research on multiculturalism, race, identity politics, and movement research on the embodiment of concepts such as exile, duality, and systematic oppression. The film examines two specific white Latina experiences of navigating identity, ultimately aiming to exemplify a method of countering colorblind ideology through artistic conversation. Recognizing our own participation in longstanding oppressive social systems that govern modern society is essential to creating new avenues of communication about racial difference.
