- Abstract
The effects of family income on earnings trajectories of college graduates are explored. An emphasis is placed on investigating for whom these effects are the strongest. The data set from the NLSY97 is restricted to those who received a 4-year college degree by age 24. Average early career and prime age earnings were calculated with an additional variable representing the difference between time periods to model earnings trajectories. These variables were regressed with a variable for average earnings at 16-17 and additional variables for family income quintiles. Family income had the most significant effect on earnings at labor market entry, with unexpected effects during the prime earnings period and on earnings trajectories.
