Memorializing the Quotidian Narrative: A Reconsideration of the Commemorative Vessel Through Text, Image and Form Public Deposited

- Abstract
My work explores the interaction between the individual and the historical, the personal and the monumental, through a reexamination of the commemorative vessel. In the making of this work, I employ such antiquated methods as wheel-throwing, hand-building and painted illustrations. The resulting objects are inherently nostalgic, embodying both formal attributes of the old, the narrative qualities of everyday speech, and a highly local vernacular. By mimicking historical pottery forms, my work participates in and comments on the long history of the commemorative ceramic vessel and its multiple meanings.
