Although there are several theories concerning the origin of the Lyons Sandstone the writer believes that they are based on insufficient evidence to warrant a conclusion. 

The purpose of this thesis is to describe the characteristics of the formation in detail and to interpret the origin of the formation in terms of the evidence presented.
