Abstract
  • An investigation of art programs and philosophies of various nations was made to understand better current conditions and trends in art education. In this study a comparison of differences and similarities in the various art programs and philosophies was made. The findings were applied by the author, a prospective art educator, to his own artistic activity. The purpose:

    1.    To evaluate artistic growth through educational contacts.

    2.    To understand the influences involved in the education.

    3.    To determine the reasons for the author’s present level of attainment

Form letters were sent to 19 different nations. A different form letter was sent to the Junior Red Cross and the United Nations. The results indicated a possibility of summarizing art practices in two specific categories: the craft approach and the creative approach. Most countries appear to use both approaches in their art programs.

    The results show:

    1.    That the author’s drawing and painting have been directed by and involved with a creative approach.

    2.    That there is probably no ideal situation in art education, for each nation must follow the policies that are most valid for its students.
