Personal Symbolism in Painting Public Deposited

Download PDF- Abstract
This thesis is an attempt to explain the manner in which my paintings evolve. My premise is that the visual presentation of an idea takes the form of a personal symbol. The basis of this personal symbol is derived from my abstraction of an inner feeling for nature and man. The development of the personal symbol depends on my translation of an inner feeling for objects into the elements of design, these being line, pattern, shape, texture and color.
Since the elements of design have inherent sensations which correspond to sensation of matter, I believe the personal symbol contains qualities which are universal. These universal qualities are ones which make the personal symbol communicable. The intuited inner feeling for objects translated into a new relationship of the inherent qualities of design elements is an expression of a new relationship of ideas, and constitutes the creation of the personal symbol.
