Abstract

A wealth of resources exist regarding the preparation of audition excerpts for most of the instruments in the modern orchestra. Tuba is similar, with a number of different sources offering some level of guidance for those who may be unfamiliar with the musical material that frequently appears on orchestral audition lists. When considering auditions for the United States premier military bands, many instrumentalists are asked to prepare a standard selection of excerpts from the orchestral literature, perhaps in addition to a smattering of marches or other wind band excerpts. However, in the case of the tuba, military band audition lists draw almost exclusively from the wind band repertoire, and there is little extant literature on the preparation of this material. This project compiles the fifteen excerpts that have appeared most frequently on recent audition lists. This document contains a reproduction of each excerpt, brief biographical information on the composer and the piece itself, strategies for preparation and performance, and a list of reference recordings. This should serve as a starting point to those looking to begin study of the wind band repertoire.
