Download PDF- Abstract
My exhibition is about life and the regenerative powers of birth and family. The qualities of love and endurance of the old and the energy and exhuberance of the young are brought together in my symbolic creation, under the same roof, so to say. Individually and collectively we can celebrate life through the arts. We can share emotionally the compulsions, instincts, and victories that make humans so unique. My exhibition emphasizes the burial aspect of the death and regenerative process. It is about the rituals with which humans celebrate their passage through life and death.
My exhibition, finally, expresses my basic desire to bury and say good-bye to my grandmothers. Both died during the three and a half years of my graduate studies. I was unable spiritually and physically to ritualize their passings.
My exhibition is also about my womanhood and my identification with the earth. It is an attempt to explain the sources of my origin and the hold my family traditions have on my creative work. It is my belief t hat we all consciously or unconsciously share in the idea that the earth is mother, giver and taker of life.
