Abstract
  • Schoenberg's music can be divided into three periods. The music of the first period was tonal, or at least tonal-centric. The First Chamber Symphony was completed in 1906, toward the end of the first period. With the Chamber Symphony, Schoenberg created a work of concision and brevity in contrast to earlier works, such as Verklarte Nacht, Pelleas und Melisande and the Dminor Quartet, that were influenced by Wagner, Brucker and Mahler. Schoenberg said: "I had become tired-not as a listener-as a composer of writing music of such length."
