Graduate Thesis Or Dissertation
A Day in the Life of Jerry A.K.A. Santa Fe Charlie Public Deposited
- Abstract
My thesis work is on the everyday documentation of the homeless community where I live in West Denver, Colorado. In preparation for this thesis project, I walked around and communicated with the homeless people of my neighborhood. The large scale of the drawings is meant to be confrontational; the artwork is approximately eleven feet in height and thirty-two feet in length. I used different types and sizes of inexpensive markers to illustrate my work, which are the same markers that I used to do graffiti on the street. In addition, l used specific materials like spray paint and discarded paper that I found in a garbage can. l chose black and white drawings without color because people see the homeless as a black and white issue. In society we see the homeless as an eyesore, and we cringe and turn our backs on this reality. Documenting the homeless for my thesis project was an opportunity for me to illustrate the message to people about the homeless in order to look more closely at those who are deemed invisible and ultimately observe the humanity in them.
