- Abstract
By the time of his death in 1920, Charles Tomlinson Griffes had begun to be recognized as a significant force in American music. Griffes' works included a large number of songs and lesser amounts of piano, chamber, and orchestral works, as well as transcriptions, a few choral pieces, and an organ composition. He spent his entire professional career as a music teacher at the Hackley School for boys in Tarrytown, New York, journeying to New York City on weekends and vacations, where he actively promoted his compositions.
