Abstract
  • Benzal-phenyl-glyoxalidone has been a known compound for approximately half a century. The marked similarity, of the product resulting from the reaction of benzaldehyde with benzamidine-glyoxal addition product to benzal-phenyl-glyoxalidone, has led to this investigation.

The structure of the condensation product has been established as being identical to that of the known benzal-phenyl-glyoxalidone. Upon this evidence, it may be assumed that about forty-five other compounds prepared in the same manner, from a number of aromatic aldehydes, various amidines and glyoxal are also glyoxalidones.

In the course of the investigation, an improved method for the preparation of 2-phenyl-4-benzaloxazalone-5 and 2-phenyl-4-benzal-glyoxalidone-5 have been developed. These methods result in significant increases in the yields.

A number of derivatives of benzal-phenyl-glyoxalidone have been prepared and analyzed. A structure has been assigned to each and a theory proposed for its formation.

Also, upon evidence gained in this investigation, a theory has been proposed for the existence of two isomeric forms of 2-phenyl-4-benzal-glyoxalidone-5.
