Learning To Break The Loop Public Deposited
- Abstract
In this three article dissertation, I use the sci-fi metaphor of breaking time loops to develop theory and practical knowledge about designing toward new, more just futures in times of “history repeating itself”. I explore three contexts for learning and development 1) a youth participatory action research project working to uphold its Frierian values around knowledge co-construction as the partnership grew from tens to hundreds of contributors 2) a Research Practice Partnership in science education attempting to enact ideas about good pedagogy in its internal partnership meetings, and 3) the efforts of a self-organized political coalition to support community members to deliver personalized testimony in favor of intersectional social studies standards that had come under right wing attack. Drawing on sociocultural theories for learning and using a variety of methods, I worked to make a difference now to the groups that I studied. Across the cases, enacting our ideas about action, change, and justice meant working to expand participation in the face of power differences.
