- Abstract
As with many of the pianist-composers, the tactile element is a crucial part of the genesis of Claude Debussy’s (1862-1918) piano works. Clues regarding the use of touch, physical gesture, and pedaling are found within his meticulous and innovative notation. Though highly specific, Debussy’s system of notation can at first appear perplexing, hindering the initial learning process. This project aims to facilitate the learning process of the Préludesfor piano by discussing Debussy’s use of articulation. This is enhanced by a general understanding of Debussy’s orchestral sound world, which can inform interpretative choices.
