Abstract
  • Modern education is faced with the problem of educating the pupils who are enrolled in our elementary and secondary schools to assume the responsibilities of world citizenship. The citizen of the future must be prepared for and have an opportunity to experience life in a school environment mere international values are recognized. Nothing less than this objective is worthy of those who would assume the duty of assisting in the instruction of the coming generation. The purpose of this study is to examine the ways in which this task is being done in a few school systems of the country where a serious effort is being made to develop world mindedness on the part of children and young people.

Modern civilization cannot exist, much less thrive, in a world which is in constant ·danger of global war. Throughout human history, armed conflict has been accepted as a method for the settlement of international disputes. During recent times international violence has become increasingly destructive in terms of human life and property and correspondingly vicious in purpose and intent. It is therefore a reasonable assumption that the extreme form of competition which we call "war" must cease to have a placein our society. It is assumed that educators should informthemselves concerning ways in which the resources atthe command of modern education can be utilized to promotethe cause of world peace.

In the course of this study an attempt has been made to consider some of the positive and negative social forces which are advancing and retarding the cause of international understanding in our contemporary domestic social scene. It is not assumed that this list of social movements is complete or that an exhaustive discussion is presented for each subject mentioned. The list should be considered as suggestive rather than comprehensive, and general rather than complete in treatment.
