Abstract
  • Through studying and performing Chaminade's Piano Trio No. 2, I refined my technical skills and developed a deeper, more intimate connection with Chaminade and the French Romantic piano tradition. Driven by a determination to master her musical language and imbue my interpretations with a nuanced aesthetic understanding, I became interested in refining my skills through diverse approaches to pianism and exploring works by underrepresented composers. Recognizing the pedagogical value and artistic sensitivity inherent in such pieces, I became increasingly drawn to conducting further research on Chaminade and other French women composers.

After some listening and research, my exploration expanded beyond Chaminade (1857-1944) to encompass the works of two other French women composers, Hélène de Montgeroult (1762-1836) and Louise Farrenc (1804-1875). Their contributions, spanning the Classical and Romantic eras, gained them significant acclaim during their lifetimes. Yet, their names and compositions have not received the recognition and performance they rightfully deserve in recent years. Their musical styles resonate deeply for me, with their refinement and elegance. All three composers have composed musically, and pedagogically significant piano etudes and theme-and-variations sets.

The repertoire selected for this recording project showcases these composers’ artistic achievements. Each piece demonstrates a fusion of technical proficiency, pedagogical intent, and the charm of French musical aesthetics. To this end, I have selected two pedagogical etudes and one theme and variations composition from Hélène de Montgeroult and Louise Farrenc. The recording project also features one salon character piece, five concert etudes, and one theme-and-variations composition by Cécile Chaminade. Notably, the availability of recordings for the selected compositions is limited. Based on my research, there are currently no recordings of Montgeroult's Etude No. 5 from her Cours complet pour l'enseignement du forte piano.
