Abstract
  • Through a seminar in music theory held Fall Semester 1989 and led by Professor Gonzalez, I was introduced to the songs of the early twentieth century American composer, Charles Tomlinson Griffes. The seminar actually dealt with Impressionism, focusing on the music of Debussy and Ravel, but an off-shoot of the seminar was a study of other composers whose works were influenced by impressionist techniques. This led to a personal investigation of the impressionist elements found in the songs of Charles Griffes, in particular the cycle Four Impressions. In this lecture/recital I would like to present not only some of the results of that study, but also representative examples of Griffes' solo vocal literature from each of his creative periods.
