Abstract
  • Fuel consumption and environmental concerns motivate new engineering developments in the automotive industry. Vehicle electrification techniques, such as drivetrain hybridization and replacements of various mechanical components with electronic components require highly efficient switched-mode power converters. Analysis and design of a DC transformer (DCX) converter configuration are addressed in this thesis, including component design and efficiency optimization techniques. A 500 W prototype converter is constructed and tested in two operating modes: as a full-bridge DCX or as a dual active bridge DCX. It is shown that the DCX converter has the potential to achieve small size and high efficiency over wide ranges of operating conditions.
