Abstract
  • This writing, entitled [I]nfluence///c[O]nfluence was to supplement the MFA thesis exhibition at the University of Colorado Boulder Art Museum exhibit [I]nfluence / c[O]nfluence in April of 2020. Due to circumstances related to the COVID-19 pandemic, the physical exhibition was canceled at the museum. This paper will discuss the proposal for the museum exhibit, as well as present the digital mock-up of my thesis installation, the graphic score, and the piano interpretation by my collaborator, Charlie McClung (MM candidate in Composition, Department of Music). Like the ever-changing flow of the river, my thesis work has changed direction and reshaped its path as has the rest of humanity during this unprecedented time. The past three years have culminated in a growing body of work that focuses on my perception of the world expressed and understood through experimental music and a sculptural practice focused around rural and agricultural themes. Cultural, social, physical, and phenomenological lines of thought and boundaries that define and delineate our movement through the world continue to interest me. Within this paper I lay out five main sections; Wayfinding; The Grid, The Stave, The Undeniable Map; Deep Listening; Graphic Scores; and [I]nfluence///c[O]nfluence. Collectively, these sections explore the theme of water in Colorado and reflect on the looming global water crisis. Within this work and accompanying paper, I carry the intent of building awareness around our collective human relationship with water. This relationship is an essential aspect of preserving agricultural communities in the American West, while at the same time encouraging dialogue about the delicate balance between people and place.
