- Abstract
The Sechs deustche Lieder (Six German Songs), by Louis Spohr, and Der Hirt auf dem Felsen (The Shepherd on the Rock), by Franz Schubert, were both composed at around the same juncture in music history. Interestingly, both of these compositions use the same instrumentation: clarinet, piano, and soprano voice. Although these works have similar instrumentation and use German text, the musical and textual goals of both works have many interesting similarities and differences. In performing these pieces, I have noticed that these songs have their own individual characteristics that make them unique in the world of chamber songs.
