Abstract
  • The University of Colorado collaborated with the Nueta Hidatsa Sahnish College at the Mandan Hidatsa Arikara Nation in North Dakota on a project to provide "teaching kits" focused on environmental monitoring for use in MHA Nation classrooms in light of rapid changes brought by a recent oil boom. Teaching kits included equipment and hands on activities plus lesson plans for teachers to use in unit planning. Lesson plans focused on the concerns of teachers and students during the height of fracking activities, and can be adapted for any community experiencing these concerns. The kits and curriculum were distributed in 2016 and includes lesson plans about Introduction to Fossil Fuels and Hydraulic Fracturing, Air Quality, Water Quality, Animal Behavior, Public Health, and Media and its Impact.
