Abstract
  • Vertical Incidence Pulsed Ionospheric Radar (VIPIR) equipped with the Dynasonde analysis software was installed at the Antarctic Jang Bogo Station (JBS, 74.62 S, 164.23 E geographic coordinates and 79.87 S geomagnetic latitude) in 2015. This specific dataset that was selected for the study of long-period wave activity in the ocean - Ross Ice Shelf (RIS) - atmosphere system is 5.5-month long, between March 2015 and September 2015. During this time interval periodicity of the sounding sessions was one every 5 minutes. The dataset has been chosen because it overlaps with both seismometric array operation on the RIS and hydrophone deployment on the Ross Sea seafloor periods. The ionospheric sounding system at JBS utilizes the Dynasonde mode of operation and the Dynasonde analysis software to conduct echo recognitions and ionogram inversions to produce ionospheric parameters such as bottom-side ionospheric electron density profiles with error bars, the F-region peak density (NmF2) and the peak height (hmF2), estimates for the ion drifts, and ionospheric tilts. It is also very efficient in detection and characterization of ionospheric wave activity.

This collection of files contains only data on vertical speed V of ionospheric plasma produced by the Dynasonde software. Format of the file name is

JB57N_<start date and time UT>_<end date and time UT>_<altitude in km>_V.txt

Each file contains data for a single altitude. Format of every record in the file is

    <date and time UT><vertical speed value>

with vertical speed values represented in floating point format with 3 decimal units.
