Abstract

The remnants displayed are forms of documentation and mark making created by performing and fighting against a specific type of “play”. Play requires freedom and creativity, it is a way to learn and to grow. But, what happens when play is institutionalized? When it is systematic and controlled? When play is directed so much that freedom is smothered, coddled to ensure its surrender, suffocated by the grip of the institution?

This series is a way of exhibiting what it means to make a mess and be stuck, and the liberation that can come from it. Developed from a place of political and social turmoil, this thesis challenges what we know about the institutions that through play shape mindsets and ways of thought, and the effect it has on our society’s present and future.
