- Abstract
For the purpose of this document, I have chosen to focus on Sir William Walton’s often overlooked song cycle, A Song for the Lord Mayor’s Table. This song cycle was commissioned for the inaugural City of London Music Festival in July of 1962. The chosen text settings for the cycle were written by six different seventeenth and eighteen century poets, two of whom remain anonymous. Despite achieving some success after its initial debut in 1962, A Song for the Lord Mayor’s Table still remains fairly unknown to the musical community. In the following pages, I plan to explore why this particular composition has yet to fully receive the attention and acclaim it so well deserves.
